American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP)
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) oversees a materials testing branch known as NTPEP (National Transportation Product Evaluation Program). Within NTPEP are several subprograms that coordinate testing of materials and products used for highway safety, construction and maintenance. Among these test programs are two related to coating systems used on steel and concrete bridge structures. These nation-wide testing programs facilitate state agency (as well as toll agency, county and local municipality) access to coating system performance data that is independently generated, to assess suitability for the demands of their service environments. The programs also provide an economical, efficient way for coating manufacturers to provide unbiased performance data on their coating systems to dozens of potential users.
KTA has been the sole contract laboratory for testing coatings submitted to the NTPEP-Structural Steel Coating program since 2004. In 2017, KTA was awarded the contract for testing the coatings and sealants submitted to the NTPEP- Concrete Coating Systems program. Testing for both programs is contracted through NTPEP.
